Considering an upgrade to your bathroom for improved accessibility? Two of the most popular options are wet rooms and walk-in showers — but which one is right for your space, your mobility needs, and your budget?

At CSI Bathrooms, we install both. Here’s what you need to know to make the right choice.

What is a Wet Room?

A wet room is a fully waterproofed bathroom where the shower area is level with the rest of the floor — no step, no tray, just open access. Water drains through a floor drain, and the entire space is designed for ease of use and easy cleaning.

Pros of Wet Rooms:

  • Fully level access — ideal for wheelchair users or carer assistance

  • Sleek, modern look

  • Very easy to clean

  • No enclosure or step to navigate

Cons:

  • It can be more expensive

  • Takes longer to install (requires full room waterproofing)

  • An open layout may not suit everyone

What’s a Walk-In Shower?

A walk-in shower has a very low tray (usually a few centimetres high) and typically includes a glass screen. It offers a safer alternative to a bath without being a full wet room.

Pros of Walk-In Showers:

  • Lower cost and faster installation

  • Still easy to access, especially for those with limited mobility

  • Familiar feel for most people

  • Great for retrofitting into existing bathrooms

Cons:

  • Still has a small step

  • Glass screens may make access trickier for carers

  • Slightly more cleaning due to screen and tray edges

Our Advice:

If you need maximum accessibility — especially for wheelchair use or carer assistance — a wet room is usually the best option. However, if you’re looking for a budget-friendly and easy-to-install upgrade from a standard bath, a walk-in shower is a fantastic choice.

Either way, we can help design a bathroom that’s safer, more stylish, and tailored to your needs.
