Key Takeaways

When renovating your bathroom, these are the features you should never compromise on:

  • High-quality shower systems and enclosures

  • Proper waterproofing and tanking

  • Quality fixtures and fittings

  • Professional installation

  • Adequate lighting

  • Storage solutions

Are you planning a bathroom renovation but feeling a bit overwhelmed about where to spend and where to save? You're definitely not alone. I've had countless conversations with customers who are trying to balance getting their dream bathroom with keeping costs under control.

So, what bathroom features should you absolutely never compromise on? And where can you potentially save a bit without sacrificing quality? These are questions we've been helping homeowners answer for over 15 years, and I'm going to share what we've learned with you.

The Features Worth Every Penny

There are certain elements we always advise customers to invest in. These aren't just little luxuries – they're the foundations of a bathroom that will serve you well for years to come.

1. High-Quality Shower Systems

If there's one thing I would say never to compromise on, it's your shower system. Think about it – you use it every single day, and there's nothing worse than a weak, temperamental shower that can't maintain a consistent temperature.

Digital showers might seem like a luxury, but they're becoming more and more popular for good reason. They give you precise temperature control, consistent water pressure, and some even let you control them from your phone adding accessibility options.

We recently installed a digital shower for a couple in Stafford who were initially hesitant about the extra cost. After using it for a few weeks, they called me to say it was the best decision they'd made. The wife particularly loved being able to turn the shower on from her phone while still in bed, so it was perfectly warm when she stepped in.

The difference between a basic shower and a good quality one is something you'll notice every single morning. And trust me, nothing ruins your day like starting it with a shower that suddenly runs cold!

2. Proper Waterproofing and Tanking

This is probably the least glamorous item on the list, but arguably the most important. Proper waterproofing (what we call 'tanking') is absolutely essential, especially in shower areas.

Water damage is one of the most common issues we see in older bathrooms. Those brown patches on the ceiling below? That's often the result of inadequate waterproofing. And fixing water damage can be incredibly costly, not to mention disruptive.

I remember a job we did in Newcastle for a family who'd previously had a bathroom installed by someone who'd cut corners on waterproofing. Within two years, they had water seeping through to their kitchen ceiling. The cost of fixing that damage, plus installing a new bathroom properly, was far more than if they'd had it done right the first time.

3. Quality Fixtures and Fittings

When I talk about fixtures and fittings, I'm referring to things like taps, showers, toilet flush mechanisms, and waste traps. These are the working parts of your bathroom, and quality really does matter here.

The difference between cheap and quality fixtures isn't just about looks – it's about longevity and performance. A good quality tap will have ceramic disc cartridges rather than rubber washers, making it much less likely to develop drips. Quality shower valves will maintain temperature better and last longer.

I would say toilet flush mechanisms are another area not to skimp on. A good quality flush system will be reliable and easy to maintain, and the difference in cost isn't actually huge.

One customer told me a story about buying the cheapest possible basin mixer tap for their previous bathroom. Within six months, it was leaking, the chrome was peeling, and the handle was loose. They ended up replacing it anyway, effectively paying twice.

4. Professional Installation

This might seem like a biased point coming from me, but I've seen the results of DIY gone wrong too many times. A bathroom is a complex space with plumbing, electrics, waterproofing, and more.

Professional installation isn't just about avoiding leaks (though that's important!). It's about ensuring everything works efficiently, looks great, and complies with regulations. A professional installer will also know how to overcome unexpected challenges, like discovering that a wall isn't straight or that pipes need rerouting.

The thing is, installation costs are typically about the same regardless of the quality of products you choose. So if you're going to invest in good quality items, it makes sense to have them installed properly too.

5. Adequate Lighting

Lighting is often an afterthought in bathroom design, but it makes such a difference to both the functionality and feel of the space. I would always recommend investing in good quality, well-planned lighting.

At CSI Bathrooms, we've been installing more and more bathrooms with motion-sensor LED lighting recently. These lights can be set to come on automatically at a low level when you enter the bathroom at night – perfect for those middle-of-the-night trips without blinding yourself with the main light!

One of my favourite bathroom features is LED lighting in niches or under basin units. It creates such a lovely atmosphere and can completely transform how a bathroom feels, especially in the evening.

6. Storage Solutions

I can't stress enough how important good storage is in a bathroom. Without it, your beautiful new space will quickly become cluttered with toiletries, towels, and all those bathroom essentials.

Well-designed storage doesn't have to cost a fortune, but it should be considered right from the planning stage. Built-in niches in shower areas, vanity units with drawers rather than cupboards (much more practical!), and utilizing awkward spaces can all make a huge difference.

We recently completed a bathroom for a family in Stone who had a fairly small space. By incorporating clever storage solutions – including a recessed cabinet that looked like just a mirror on the wall but actually had plenty of storage behind it – we were able to create a bathroom that looked clean and uncluttered but had places for everything they needed.

What You Can Compromise On (If You Need To)

While there are features you should never skimp on, there are areas where you can save a bit without sacrificing the overall quality of your bathroom:

Tiles - You can often find less expensive tiles that still look great. The quality of the installation matters more than the cost of the tile in many cases. That said, I wouldn't recommend the very cheapest tiles as they can be more prone to damage and might not wear as well.

Toilet - While you shouldn't compromise on the flush mechanism, the actual ceramic pan doesn't vary hugely in quality between mid-range and expensive options. As long as it's from a reputable brand, a mid-range toilet can be a good place to save.

Accessories - Things like towel rails, toilet roll holders, and robe hooks can be sources of savings. These items are relatively easy to upgrade later if you want to.

The False Economy of Cutting Corners

One thing my team and I always stress to customers is that bathrooms should be built to last. Cutting corners to save money upfront often leads to higher costs down the line when things start to fail.

A bathroom isn't like a living room where you can easily change the paint colour if you don't like it. It's a complex, technical space with water, electricity, and drainage to consider. Doing it right the first time is almost always the most cost-effective approach in the long run.

Real Cost Differences and Value for Money

Let's talk a bit about actual costs, because I think it's important to be transparent about what quality really costs.

For example, a basic shower might cost around £150-200, while a good quality digital shower system might be £500-700. That's a significant difference, but spread over the 10+ years you'll use it, it works out to pennies per day for a much better showering experience.

Similarly, proper tanking might add £200-300 to your installation costs, but can save you thousands in potential water damage repairs.

The thing is, when we talk about not compromising, I'm not suggesting you need to buy the most expensive option for everything. What I'm advocating for is value for money – products that offer the best balance of quality, longevity, and price.
